Europa Hosts Fascist Scum
This week, for three nights running, the Europa Hotel shamelessly rolls out the red carpet for outspoken racist, fascist agitator and Zionist Katie Hopkins, platforming her bigotry under the guise of a comedy show. Hopkins marked her arrival in the occupied six counties by visiting a space reflective of her values — a bonfire in Moygashel — where loyalists have placed a model of a mosque to be burned in effigy, as they regularly burn effigies of Catholics and Irish figures. It was only last year that loyalists burned an effigy of a boat carrying refugees to celebrate their bigotry, on which Hopkins has made her disgusting, reactionary opinions clear. In 2015, she wrote: “Make no mistake, these migrants are like cockroaches”, in a column she headlined, “Rescue boats? I'd use gunships to stop migrants”, and has referred to asylum seekers as “a plague of feral humans”.
Neither the burning of a mosque in effigy nor the platforming of Hopkins by Europa Hotel is an isolated failure of judgment or the result of ignorance. Both are the ordinary functioning of a system in which racism is platformed wherever it is profitable and politically useful, by whoever happens to be positioned to profit from it. As was stated only weeks ago, when loyalist gangs carried out violent pogroms during their racist rioting across the north of Ireland that saw them target migrants and people of colour, burning out their homes and shops: racism is not merely the result of ignorance or “false consciousness”, but is a crucial part of the imperialist system, serving as the ideological justification for imperialism and national oppression and is explicitly reinforced through the mass media, elected representatives, and so-called community leaders, who all trip over themselves in demonising immigrants. It was only in 2018 that DUP's Ian Paisley Jr retweeted an Islamophobic comment posted by Hopkins that read: “March 2018. London has a higher murder rate than New York... and Ramadan's not yet begun.”
That the Europa Hotel should rent its ballroom to a woman gloating over a burning mosque, likening migrants to “cockroaches”, and has called Palestinians in Gaza “filthy rodents burrowing beneath Israel”, is an explicit reflection of the values it champions and is prepared to capitalise on for profit. We call on people to make clear their disgust and disapproval of the Europa Hotel's hosting of Hopkins.
